PROJECT INTRODUCTION

REUNION is a project to design fifty-one new flags for the fifty American states and Washington, DC. I conceived of and completed it for my senior Graphic Design thesis at UMass Dartmouth.

I developed a visual identity system for the flags and then used it to design fifty-one new flags for the fifty states and Washington, D.C., along with an infographic poster and this website to display the flags and explain their meanings.

Most of our country’s state flags suffer from design flaws. They are rich in meaningful images, but most of those images are far too small to see when the flags are up high on a pole or fluttering in the wind. Some flags have words or phrases printed on them, which are illegible for the same reasons. Finally, most of the flags either look too similar to one another or are so different that no visual connection between them exists.

With REUNION, I seek to address these flaws with redesigned flags for a more perfect aesthetic union.
