IOWA

New state flag

Region: Midwest

Emblem: Hawkeye; lower-case "i" and upper-case "A".
Iowa's nickname is "the hawkeye state" in honor of Chief Hawk Eye, a Sauk Indian leader who lost a war against the United States and afterwards settled in Iowa.

Field: Three vertical bars.
The current state flag features a field of three vertical bars, the center bar being about twice the width of either of the two outer bars, with the state seal in the center bar. This design preserves the overall form of the current flag but replaces the seal with the new emblem.
