Kentucky's motto is "united we stand, divided we fall," and the state seal features a frontiersman and an urban businessman shaking hands. The connected "K" and "Y" symbolize this spirit of union and cooperation.

Two regions.
The field further reinforces the symbolism of the emblem: the two rectangular regions are colored differently yet jointly comprise one flag for the entire state, just as people from all walks of life jointly comprise Kansas society.
