LOUISIANA

New state flag

Region: South

Emblem: Fleur-de-lis; cursive "l" and Roman upper-case "A".
Louisiana was originally a French colony and its culture today reflects that heritage in many respects, including the popularity of the French fleur-de-lis as a symbol for the state. It is featured on the state's highway welcome signs, which announce "Welcome to Louisiana" in both English and French.

Field: Three vertical bars.
The field further reinforces Louisiana's French connection: the flag of France is three vertical bars of equal width. The new state flag's center bar is wider than the others to provide sufficient visual breathing room for the new emblem.
