The flags' fields (backgrounds) have different meaings. In a few cases, they simply reference the forms of the emblem, but they usually
add symbolic meaning to the flag or expand on the emblem's meaning.
California's field is a wavy line dividing its two main colors. The line and the blue area represent the Pacific Ocean, which forms the state's
enormous western border, and near which most Californians live. Also, it adds the ocean to the list of biomes symbolized by the emblem.
